Every entry point tested, every keycard and fob system verified, and all summer contractor access credentials revoked before students return.
All surveillance cameras inspected for coverage gaps, lens obstructions, and recording functionality — especially in areas modified during summer construction.
All officers assigned to the campus briefed on updated post orders, new student population, staff changes, and the school’s emergency response plan.
Visitor management systems updated, approved pick-up lists refreshed, and front desk staff retrained on check-in and ID verification procedures.
Lockdown, evacuation, and medical emergency plans reviewed with all staff — including any personnel hired over the summer who have never practiced them.
All exterior lighting tested, parking lot coverage confirmed, and perimeter fencing or barriers inspected for damage that occurred during summer months.
Of all the issues Bryant Security encounters during pre-school security assessments, access control is the most consistently problematic. Over the course of a summer, campuses accumulate a long list of individuals who have been granted temporary access — HVAC technicians, painters, roofers, landscapers, IT contractors, and construction crews — and that access is rarely revoked promptly when the work is complete.
When students return in August, those credentials may still be active. That means individuals who have no legitimate reason to be on campus may still be able to access buildings, parking structures, or restricted areas using credentials that were never deactivated. A thorough access control audit in the weeks before school starts closes that gap before it becomes a vulnerability.
Bryant Security recommends that schools conduct a full credential audit no later than two weeks before the first day — reviewing every active access card, fob, and code in the system, verifying current authorization for each, and revoking anything that cannot be immediately confirmed as legitimate.
For many South Florida schools, the single most chaotic security environment of the entire year is the first week of morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Hundreds of vehicles, unfamiliar parents, new carpool arrangements, and students who don’t yet know the dismissal routine all converge at the same time — creating exactly the kind of crowded, disorganized environment that makes it difficult for staff to identify unauthorized individuals or prevent unauthorized access.
