Crime Prevention Month:
Getting Ready for
the Holiday Season
Practical Steps for South Florida Businesses, Communities, and Property Managers โ By Bryant Security
October is National Crime Prevention Month, a nationwide observance led by the National Crime Prevention Council since 1984. As the month comes to a close, it is the right moment for South Florida businesses, property managers, and community associations to look ahead. The holiday season brings more shoppers, more deliveries, more visitors, and more events, and the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s are busy for everyone, including people looking for an easy opportunity.
Crime prevention is not about fear. It is about removing opportunities before they are exploited. Most of the steps below cost little or nothing, and every one of them is easier to complete in early November than in the middle of the holiday rush.
Plan now, not in December. Security staffing, event coverage, and equipment repairs all take time to arrange. Schedule your holiday security review before the season begins.
1. Light Up the Property
Good lighting is one of the simplest and most effective deterrents. Walk your property after dark and look for burned-out fixtures, dark corners near entrances, unlit parking areas, and landscaping that has grown over lights or created hiding spots. Shorter days mean more of the evening rush happens in the dark.
2. Control Who Comes and Goes
Gates that are propped open, doors that fail to latch, and access codes that have been shared too widely all weaken a property’s security. Review who has keys, cards, and codes, and remove access for former employees, vendors, and residents who have moved out. Make sure visitor procedures are clear and followed consistently.
3. Prepare for Holiday Deliveries
Package volume rises sharply during the holidays, and unattended packages are an easy target. Residential communities and offices should confirm where deliveries are received, who signs for them, and how residents or staff are notified. A secure package room or a staffed front desk can prevent a great deal of frustration.
4. Make Sure Cameras Are Working
A camera system only helps if it is recording clear images of the right areas. Check image quality, nighttime visibility, timestamps, storage retention, and coverage of entrances, parking areas, and loading zones. Designated staff should know how to locate and preserve footage if an incident occurs.
5. Protect Parking Areas and Vehicles
Shopping bags and gifts left in plain view make vehicles a target. Remind customers, residents, and employees to lock their vehicles, keep valuables out of sight, and stay aware when walking to their cars, especially after dark. Visible patrols in parking areas are a strong deterrent during peak hours.
6. Plan Security for Holiday Events
Holiday parties, community celebrations, and religious services bring larger crowds. Coordinate guest lists, parking, entry points, and emergency access with your security team ahead of time, and make sure everyone knows who to contact if something goes wrong.
7. Train Staff to Recognize and Report
Employees, front desk staff, and maintenance teams are often the first to notice something unusual. Make sure they know what to look for, who to tell, and when to call 911. Clear reporting procedures turn every staff member into part of your security program.
8. Get a Professional Security Assessment
An outside perspective often spots what daily routines overlook. A professional security assessment reviews your property’s vulnerabilities, traffic flow, lighting, access control, and staffing, and gives you a clear plan for the season ahead.
